Our experiences with Alamo car hire

As part of the package, we were entitled to an economy level car. Prior to traveling, we decided that we wanted to upgrade to a mid-size SUV, our first port of call was to the holiday company we booked through. This was at best a painful experience, the call center was based in India after spending 10 minutes trying to explain what I wanted to do, I was given a price of £200 (we could rent the desired vehicle from scratch for $186). I then tried to upgrade with the rental company direct and was advised that this was not available as the original vehicle was included with a holiday package. We decided that we would see what we could do when we arrived at the airport.
On arrival at the airport, we made our way to the Alamo desk and asked if it was possible to upgrade we were advised that we can have any vehicle we wanted with the exception of a convertible. We selected the midsize SUV and was advised the upgrade cost was $156. When we asked to have the “SunPass” added were were advised that Alamo operated a different scheme called “No Toll” which only charged us an admin fee for each day that we used a toll road, up to a maximum of $19 for the whole duration of hire, and then the cost of the toll. We were then shown to our vehicle and on hearing that we normally book through Dollar we were then given a free upgrade to a standard SUV.
In all, we have to say that the whole process including the return of the vehicle at the end of our stay was very good and we will certainly consider Alamo again.
